Snacking on Sunshine: A Florida Citrus Showdown RESULTS

The Canadian Food and Wine Institute was host to the Florida Department of Citrus on Saturday April 13 for a unique culinary competition Snacking on Sunshine: A Florida Citrus Showdown. This competition called on students of the CFWI to produce a locally inspired dish with a unique infusion of Florida citrus.

With twenty-four competitors competing in teams of two Benchmark Restaurant was buzzing with foodies and family of students as the dishes were savoured throughout the afternoon event. Joining the event as guest judges were Ted Reader Canada’s Godfather of the Grill alongside local radio personality Jack Peets of 105.7 EZ Rock and Lydia Knorr of Feel Better. With an incredible array of outstanding culinary plates they certainly had a challenging task when deciding who would reign supreme.

The competitive categories were Best Savoury Dish Best Sweet Dish and Most Unique use of Florida Citrus. For each of these categories the winners received a $1000 cheque from the Florida Department of Citrus. And while the students were working to craft plates that would impress the judges it is important to note that they crafted more than one hundred of their dish to feed the sold out crowd of 125 guests in attendance. The catch they too had a vote in the People’s Choice category!

People’s Choice: Nina Sharpe and Doris Stark
