Student-organized craft beer festival brewing for downtown St. Catharines August 7


It’s a downtown craft beer festival that promises to be a class act.

That’s because students from Niagara College’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program will not only be behind the variety of craft beers to be sampled at Project Brew, but the event itself.

Project Brew will be held at the Market Square in St. Catharines on August 7 from 5-9 p.m. Expected to draw about 500 people, the indoor craft beer festival will feature 17 student beers designed and brewed by students in the graduating class of the College’ Brewmaster program. The public will have an opportunity to sample a variety of student-crafted beers including Bohemian Pilsner, Belgian Tripel, Wheat IPA, Kolsh, Saison, Rye, Lager, Wheat Wine, Malt Liquor, Oatmeal Stout, and more.

The festival will also include breweries owned and operated by NC Teaching Brewery students, graduates or teachers, including Big Brothers Brewing Co., High Road, Garden Brewers and Shiny Apple Cider.

This will be the second Project Brew craft beer festival  – the first was held in April – however, the first time the event will be held off-campus.

“We wanted to bring our beer to the community rather than make them come to us,” said event chair Luke Goerzen, who is a second-year Brewmaster student. “It also gives us, the students, the opportunity to host and operate a beer festival similar in form to those which we may later be attending as brewers.”

In addition to brewing the beer, 17 students are working on the event as part of their Sales, Marketing and Promotions class, and a number of additional students from the program are volunteering as well.

“The event is extremely beneficial to our Brewmaster students because it enables them to be on the other side of an industry event. They are able to learn the practice of all the different facets of making an event successful from its conception to execution such as marketing, logistics, and working with vendors and hosts,” said class instructor Brianne Hawley. “Furthermore, the students will also be assuming the role of vendors as they will be exhibiting and pouring beers while meeting face-to-face with the community, talking about their passion for beer and interacting with consumers of their product.”

Food vendors will be on site such as The Yellow Pear, PigOut Roasters, Sweetie Pie’s Bakery and Eh Jose.

Music will be provided by local indie/folk band Shore Thing and ska/punk band The Cardboard Crowns.

The event is open to guests 19 years of age or older (valid photo ID is required). Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The cost includes a branded glass and five drink tokens (additional tokens may be purchased for $2 each). For tickets visit
